Automation, reporting and editorial responsibility
A newsroom test for autonomous systems
Automation can support research and production, but publishing creates obligations to readers. A useful policy assigns responsibility at each handoff instead of describing a tool as either fully autonomous or merely assistive.
Separate assistance from publication
The Associated Press’s July 2026 standards allow defined assistive uses such as early research, summaries, transcription and headline suggestions, with journalist review before publication. AP says AI does not replace reporting, sourcing, judgment or verification; it also prohibits generative AI from creating or altering news photography.

Keep a human verification path
For every automated step, name who checks the source material, who can correct an error, and who decides whether the result is publishable. The question is concrete: can an editor trace a sentence or image claim back to evidence and correct it before readers see it?

Disclose material changes
When AI materially shapes published content, set a disclosure rule readers can understand. For images and other media, provenance information can help describe an asset’s history. C2PA Content Credentials are designed to make provenance tamper-evident; their own explainer says they do not decide whether the content is true.

Pilot one workflow at a time
Choose a repeatable task with a clear baseline, a reviewer and a rollback. Measure time saved alongside missed errors, corrections, source quality and the work shifted onto journalists. Expand only when the newsroom can explain the result to readers.
